TC 31-12 — Water Confidence and Combat Diver Preparation

Most candidates who fail water events are not weak swimmers. They are unprepared swimmers. TC 31-12 builds water competency from the ground up: the SAFE principle, Army classification levels, the physiology of breath holding, shallow water blackout and why it kills trained swimmers, the survival float and trouser inflation float to Army AWST standard, drown-proofing, the Army travel stroke, Combat Sidestroke technique and drill sequence, fin swimming mechanics with specific attention to the ankle and knee stressors that running fitness provides no protection against, open water navigation, and cold water immersion physiology using Tipton’s three-phase model. Part II covers CDQC preparation in full: the MAC pool task standards, the Running Rumor, the Bubble Standard for controlled ascent, buddy procedures including the collar tow, underwater knot tying, and a 24-week integrated program across two tiers. Tier 1 targets CWST readiness and Army Class Three BSS standard in eight weeks. Tier 2 is a 16-week CDQC track built to MAC task completion. If water is in your pipeline, this is the manual.
